Construction methods to lay the track on the layout of Barb & Allan

First the track was laid out on the ground as the route was picked

The track was removed and a trench was dig in it's place

Then the trench was filled with ballast (crusher fines)

The ballast was leveled and packed and the track laid on top

And more ballast poured over the track and rubbed in between the ties

until the track was level and held firmly in place

Bridges and trestles were done in the same way, track laid out and staked to grade

And the bridges and trestles built in place to support the track

Then mountains and tunnels were built

And finally ready to run some trains, just the beginning of the construction!
