The Layout of Grant & Donna

Layout Construction

Construction commenced about the first week in September, 2006 and was "shut down" by snow, sleet and cold weather in late October, 2006. Some more sensible people may ask........why so late in the season??? Good question ;-)

I've been thinking about Garden Railroading for a number of years, finely got up enough nerve to give the club a call and attend the 2006 "Open House Event". What I discovered was a fine bunch of hospitable people and an awesome hobby that combines social get-togethers, learning, gardening, indoor/outdoor activity and much more.

Construction Photos

1.) high angle shot of pond to the southeast taken from the deck;
- The pond, larger shrubs and trees are existing landscaping. The pond is approximately seven feet long and approximately four feet wide at its widest. We planted
miniature Alberta Spruce/Fir??, Junipers and Potentillas in amongst the 3/4 " crushed rock.

2.) low angle shot of same area taken from the ground to the south;
- We used 3/4 " crushed rock as ground cover. The backyard is quite flat, with about a two to three foot fall from the house to the southwest corner of the
backyard behind the garden shed to add a little interest, we included a few raised mounds edged partially by sandstone boulders.
- The track layout was determined by laying out the track completely and then cutting trenches for the roadbed. I choose 1/4 " sanding fines (crushed 1/4 " rock with a lot of fines and dirt.
- I was amazed at the volume of crushed rock, sanding fines and sandstone boulders used in this relatively small layout. If I recall correctly, there were approximately six to seven 1/2 ton pick-up truck loads and one dumptruck load.

3.)low angle shot towards garden shed;
- as you can see we only had time to complete placement of the roadbed. The railroad is a single line in the shape of a dogbone that encircles the shed to the
west and the pond to the east.
